Apple's iOS 17 Update May Include Highly-Requested Features and Mixed-Reality Headset Expected to Debut at WWDC

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple's upcoming iOS 17 software update may include some highly requested features, contrary to previous reports that the update would mainly focus on bug fixes and optimizations. The release, codenamed "Dawn," is now said to prioritize incorporating several of the most requested features from users. However, specific details on these features have not been revealed yet.

One possibility is that iOS 17 may allow sideloading apps, which would enable users to download apps without being dependent on the App Store. Last December, Bloomberg reported that Apple was preparing to allow alternative app stores on its iPhones and iPads to comply with European Union requirements coming in 2024.

Like previous software updates, iOS 17 will likely be unveiled at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, alongside other operating system versions such as watchOS 10, tvOS 17, and macOS 14. Additionally, at WWDC, Apple is expected to reveal its highly anticipated mixed-reality headset, which was internally demoed to executives last week at Steve Jobs Theater. According to The Information, the headset may resemble a pair of ski goggles and will feature multiple cameras for real-time movement tracking and viewing of the real world.
